Most of the meters in our service territory are equipped with an automated reading device known as a "Turtle." When installed, a "Turtle" counts the revolutions of the meter disc. This information is then transmitted over the distribution line to the substation, where it is sent over a regular phone line to the REA office. Once the reading is received at the office, it is transferred directly to the billing computer.
Traditionally, meter readings are written down by meter readers and then "keyed" into the computer by hand before a bill can be generated. Both of these steps expose the system to human error, and the process of check and double check can be lengthy as well as costly.
Now, when a customer questions a bill, if the meter has a "Turtle," we now provide the member with more information and at a lower cost. |
